The Seagull

With an ensemble of eleven and twelve-year-olds, Malmö Dockteater performs the epoch-making, broken-up and fantastic theatre classic The Seagull by Anton Chekhov. In period-accurate nineteenth-century costumes, the children put their teeth into discussions on stage about the meaning of art, celebrity, life choices, failed ideals, the young generation's view of the future, the cruelty of aging and of course love, love and love.

We have adapted the play, removing some roles and shortening it, but keeping the essence of the original. It becomes drastic and dramatic and there is a hail of opinions, accusations and declarations of love.

A very special effect occurs when the young actors take on adult roles. For Malmö Dockteater, this is a continuation of our attempts to twist reality and shift perspectives to see the world with a different eye.
