The hunters at Karinhall
by Carl-Henning Wijkmark
directed by Erik Holmström
In The Hunters at Karinhall, three actors bring more than 100 puppets to life amidst Hermann Göring's private hunting party in the summer of 1936.
As the world teeters on the brink of collapse, the Olympics approach, and Nazism is on the rise, a decadent, erotic hunting orgy unfolds in the forests near Berlin for the Nazis' inner circle. Norwegian marathon runner Roar Trøgesen finds himself as a reluctant spy in a power game where no one knows who is hunting - and who is being hunted.
Based on the Swedish cult novel The Hunters at Karinhall, it mixes historical facts, spy thrillers, pornographic satire and uncompromising puppetry for adults.
When the novel Jägarna på Karinhall was published, it caused a scandal. Carl-Henning Wijkmark's debut from 1972 is still a difficult-to-place cult classic that stands out in Swedish literary history. Several times, directors have tried to adapt it for film, but each project has failed. Now Malmö Dockteater, in collaboration with Mungo Park in Copenhagen and Turteatern in Stockholm, will take on the "impossible task" and bring the book to life on a theater stage. Perhaps puppetry is the only art form that can give body to this wild text?
Making puppet theatre out of this novel requires going all the way in everything you do. The lust, the madness, the excess and the mania must permeate everything. It will be an uncensored play without morality. The performance will follow the path of the plot deeper into the darkness and in step with it, let the form of the performance become more grotesque and distorted. Details are magnified and scales dissolve. The people on stage take on the role of the puppets in a game of objectification and role-playing.
The work will be premiered in Copenhagen at Mungo Park and will then be rehearsed again with our Swedish ensemble to play at Bastionen in Malmö and at Turteatern in Stockholm.
For adults only.
